So sad to see the old Goldsmith’s signs come down last year. I wondered: What about those great sales on Dana Buchman and Tahari? And what about that connection to an old, trusted hometown Memphis name?

Well, I shouldn’t have worried. Macy’s might just be better. WAY better. Example: Now, in the shoe department, the cute guy who’s fetching my size 9 1/2s doesn’t have to take a field trip to look for them. He just scans the code on the bottom of the display shoe and … yes! They’re in my hands in minutes.

What gets your vote? Why?

Response to “Which is better, Macy’s or Goldsmith’s?”

As a native Memphian, I truly miss all our old home-town store names – Seessels, Julius Lewis, Goldsmith’s. The Goldsmith’s I knew growing up had impeccable service, without having to use a scanner! What on earth would happen if we combined the two to keep the tradition of the old Memphis names? Instead of Schnucks, we could have Seessels by Schnucks. Or Goldsmith’s, a Macy’s store. I know that Schnucks has allowed stores it owns in other cities to keep their original names because of the sentimental value they held – why not HERE??
