I still find it hard to wrap my mind around a newborn baby being placed inside a paper sack and handed over to firemen. On one hand, I’m glad the mother didn’t just abandon the baby in a Dumpster or bury her in the back yard leaving the dog to dig it up, which is exactly what happened last week. But on the other hand, good grief, she had 9 months to figure out what to do. She could have put it up for adoption, screened homes, checked with family or friends to see if one of them might want a baby.

Instead she pinches the umbilical cord together with a paperclip and hands it over. I’m trying to imagine what was going on in this woman’s life that would make her feel such desperation. Then I wonder if she’s feeling anything at all. I have mixed emotions. What are your thoughts on the subject?

This was such a sad story that I could do nothing but shake my head while reading it. Being a mother myself, my thoughts were the same as the Guest Diva’s……what was going on in this woman’s life that made her feel like this was the best thing to do? I think if we, as mothers, think along these lines, maybe, just maybe we could feel some sort of compassion for this woman. I’m in no way condoning what she did at all, but something made her feel like this was her ONLY way out. I’m glad she had the good sense to at least take it to another human being and not just “dump it” somewhere. I pray for all pregnant women who feel this desperation.

Who knows what any one person is going through at any given time…so many things go into coming to the “moment” we are in right now…our home lives, our childhood, our mentors…if there are any. This woman knew the firehouse was a “safe haven”, a place where you can leave a newborn within 3 days of life…no questions asked. Because of that, there is a sweet, healthy baby girl that will have her chance at life.
