I guess it’s not technically spring anymore, but it’s never too late for a bout of good old spring cleaning. And not just in the “clean the shower and sweep” sense, but in the “I am buried under mounds of stuff I don’t need and I can’t breathe anymore!” sense. When I look around my tiny apartment, I see tons of odds and ends that are just collecting dust. I really should make some room, if for no other reason than to clear the way for the stuff I’ll end up stashing through the rest of the year.
Every now and then, my apartment complex will hold a group yard sale. That seems like a great way to make some cash off your unwanted stuff, if you’re the kind of person who can be up and running at 7 a.m. when the hardcore yard-salers are ready to peek under the tarps to get a glimpse of your wares.
But, as I work evenings (and am undeniably lazy), I’m looking for a less morning-centric way of getting rid of my clutter.
A friend mentioned the Memphis Freecycle group the other day, and I don’t know why I haven’t checked it out before (possibly because I’d end up taking more stuff than I’d give away, but that’s a risk I’ll just have to take). There’s also the free board on Craigslist, but it’s not exactly hoppin’. And, of course, there’s always good reason to donate stuff to Goodwill or the Salvation Army, or even our own MIFA.
When you de-clutter, what do you do with your stuff?

Adult clothes do not sell well at yard sales, but jewelry, beauty products and household items do. For me, most clothes go straight to a charity and other items may be saved for a yard sale, depending on my mood. I’ve also been known to load the car down with clothes/household stuff and haul it to Goodwill and take the jewelry & beauty products to work with a “free to good home” note. What I find funny is that at my last yard sale, co-hosted with Mom at her house in Cordova, I could not GIVE AWAY my books. All mysteries/thrillers, most bestsellers, in great condition & priced from $.50 - $2.00…but they hardly got a second glance from anyone.

I always like the sorting through stuff and getting rid of the old, the tired, the why-did-I-save-this-anyway flotsam that accumulates around the house. Uncluttered life, uncluttered mind.
But just wait till you have kids… I recently spent no less than eight hours, with the help of my son, going through his dresser, closet and all the receptacles that hold his junk. We trucked out two garbage bags of trash and broken things, gave away outgrown toys to some neighbor kids and hauled two garbage bags full of too-small clothes to a charity.
We started on my daughter’s room Friday. Hour seven and counting…
