There are few things my oh-so-sweet but slightly off-the-chain mother can do to embarrass me. Except dancing. I’ll never forget when she declared, proudly, that she knew how to do the cha-cha slide. Then demonstrated it. I still haven’t processed that.

Then, I saw this new show on MTV, “Dances From Tha Hood.” As you might guess, the show teaches anyone how to do the latest dances. I pray to GOD that my mother doesn’t see this show and then announce, “Guess what? I know how to do the Lip Gloss!”

If you are under 50, not a mother of someone who would be mortified to see you do this, and have a good sense of rhythm, you can click on the link above to see the video. If you are my mom, you better not.

Wendy,
I must admit I am contributing to the “horror” of having a mother learning to bust a move. I instruct Jazzercise classes and we always have one or two funky routines in our hour. When I first began instructing 7 years ago I figured the younger members of the class would get a kick out of the moves but year after year it’s always the -shall we say – more mature members who can really kick it. The best thing I continue to hear is, “I showed my daughter/husband/son that new routine we are doing. They were in complete shock”. That brings a smile to my face every time. It means they are moving and enjoying themselves while getting in shape and there is nothing better than that in my opinion!

Suzanne a/k/a Hip-Hop Mom

Ha! I’m a “hip-hop mom” over 50 (oh, the horror), and I dance at a very trendy, youth-oriented studio. And I’m not bad, which totally shocks the kids, I love it. Until one of them said, “Ummm…I don’t see many– how do I put it—MOMS dancin’ up in here!” But you see, I have so many more years of dance practice behind me, that it wasn’t so hard to learn. See you out on the floor!

H-H.M.
