schooldeseg.jpg<>In today’s column, I lament the Supreme Court’s decision to severely restrict how race can be used to influence racial diversity in schools – but I acknowledge that our choices (where to go to school, where to live) have as much impact on the racial diversity in schools as anything else.

<> How much, if at all, does diversity matter to you? Do your children attend a diverse school – and if not, does that matter to you?

Diversity is very important to me, and will play a large part in where I send my daughter to school. I would like for her to spend time with students of different races and religions. I can’t think of a better way to teach her tolerance.

I grew up in a small town, and the racial make-up of the town matched the racial composition of the school. It had to: there were only three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. There wasn’t a lot of religions diversity–everyone was either church of Christ or Baptist, with a few, renegade Methodists–but at least black and white kids were right there beside each other. It really helped.

Diversity is important but it is not the end goal for school. I don’t think kids sould be bused or school lines drawn for racial reasons. I don’t have a problem with this Supreme Court decision.
