You probably have a pair, and I KNOW your kids do — super-comfy, actually frumpy, wear-’em-anyway Crocs are everywhere. Despite how fun and (admit it) cheap they are, my prediction is that soon they’ll be banned for kids to wear to school, and that that’s actually a pretty good idea.

I overheard some moms talking yesterday about a story, which actually broke last year, about a kid’s foot wearing Crocs getting stuck in the cracks of an escalator (sounds like she almost lost a toe), which has spawned some interesting writing about who’s actually responsible. (Yes, shoestrings and flip-flops and all kinds of stuff can also get caught in escalators, too. Still.)

Today, though, a good friend of mine was telling me about taking her pre-school age daughter to the pediatrician, not for the first time, about what she had been thinking was maybe a recurrent inner ear infection. Sweet Girl had fallenĀ and put a big gash in her forehead; I was actually there when she fell and cut her chin a couple of months ago. My pal was wondering if she was having balance problems.

Uh, no, said her doc. She has a Croc problem.

Turns out SG was wearing her pink Crocs every time she’s fallen over the last year, except for once when a “horse flipped over,” admits my friend.

No word on whether those pink Crocs are history, but I feel confirmed in my long-held insistance that Tomas not wear his Crocs to school, and certainly that little ones not wear them at all.

What do you think? Have you or your kids had any Croc-related accidents? Should they be banned from school, and for little ones altogether?

Crocs have been banned at our school, as have shoes with wheels. I feel vindicated by your post because I have never purchased Crocs for my kids (ages 5 & 3), even though everyone around us was wearing them. They provide zero in the way of support or structure….your kids’ feet just flop around in there. While they may be comfortable, I don’t see how they can be safe for school, gym class, recess or playgrounds.

My daughter, who is 13, got in-grown toenails on both big toes while wearing Crocs. She reports some other friends had similar problems.
So after two minor podiatric surgeries we said Adios to Crocs.
