You know who they are: There are just some people in your life who make you smile, just thinking about them. The barista who does a mean imitation of Cher singing “Gypsies Tramps and Thieves” while you wait for your latte. The checker at the store who calls you darlin’ … and it’s NOT annoying. The pal from choir who has such great energy you always want to sit next to her. The actress, comedienne, TV personality, columnist, trainer who help you get through the day. (Those are the guys who make ME smile, above, in a great Jennifer Balink photo.)
At any rate, I’m looking for local women — young, old, women of color, not — who make YOU smile, for an upcoming issue of Skirt! Tell me who she is, and why you thought of her. Leave a comment here, or send me a note at kleinmann@skirtmemphis.com.
Soon, OK? We all need one more reason to smile.

I admit (as a male) I don’t know much about Divas (even with a lovely wife and 2 girls at home), but I do enjoy reading the postings from time to time and when I read this one, one lady popped in my mind and as I sit here writing this I cannot help but smile when I think about her. Linda Carter (not the actress who played Wonder Woman but she is in many ways a Wonder Women because she is has been a foster mother to countless kids over the years) makes me smile not only when I see her but just when I hear her name. She is one of those people who when you meet her for the first time, you feel like you have known her for years and she is your best friend. Though she seems rushed and a little frazzled, Linda will tell me something about women that will make me blush but I realize that in may ways I am just one of her girls. Rarely, does someone cross paths with such a women but I count myself lucky to say I have and just making this comment will put a smile on my face for the rest of the day. Thanks Linda!!!

You have the cutest kid!
Did you actually need to be able to identify these people for your article? I’m afraid I don’t know names, just “that nice lady who works there…”
There’s a lady at my Walgreen’s who wears a big button that says “God is always good” and a serene expression on her face. She’s just a lovely person, especially when you’re sick and have to fill a prescription and there’s no place on earth you’d less prefer to be. It’s the Walgreens on Kirby Parkway and Quince.
My husband and I are night owls, so people who are cheerful and happy about having to work at 3 am are some of our favorite people. One of the night checkers at our Kroger’s (Kirby Parkway near Quince) is a darling woman. By now I know all about her family and she knows all about mine; we swap recipes and stories.
There are nice folks working service positions all over Memphis, but these are two of my favorites.
Honestly, Leanne, YOU make me smile on a regular basis. I’m a sucker for redheads.
