natural.jpgOK, so with the new year, I’m all into Dr. Oz’s anti-aging regimen, and you’ve already helped me find a green tea I love. Now the question is about natural deodorant.

No, it probably won’t make me look any younger, but there’s some evidence that the paraben preservatives in mainstream deodorants can become like estrogen and may (may, it’s not proven yet) be a factor in breast cancer. Shaving often only aggravates the problem, according to this short magazine story. And you could probably guess that anything that keeps you from sweating isn’t going to be great for you in the long term

But friends, Tom’s of Maine Calendula deodorant flat doesn’t work. It’s sticky going on, and has an OK scent, but as the day wears on, the, um, scent doesn’t help.

So what natural deodorants do you use, and what do you like?

oh geez, I’m afraid to find out what all may cause cancer in all the various hair, body and face products I use. I’d almost rather not know.

I’d love to find a deodorant that works, natural or not. My 40th birthday apparently came with a new set of sweat glands because I’ve been sweating, and stinking, ever since. I’ve never been one who sweats much, or stinks, and I have no idea what to try next. I’ve tried the OTC “prescription strength” deodorants but they don’t work either.

Kalisa, I’m with you. I don’t want to be afraid of my food, deodorant, hair products, etc. and it is sometimes just too scary to read the latest news about such studies.

Remember, deodorant doesn’t stop sweating. And, if it doesn’t have anything to kill bacteria, it will do little to mask odor. Hair also traps odor-causing bacteria so not shaving is only going to make you smell worse. That’s part of the reason guys’ underarm funk is so funky.

I’ve never used them, but overseas, many folks use deodorant crystals. I dunno what they are made of, but lots of people talk about them as an alternative to the commercial “alternatives” like Tom’s. You’d probably do just as well to swab on alcohol in the morning followed by a spritz of perfume, as they kill bacteria and mask odor respectively.

I also say that life causes cancer. There’s paraben in lots of products, most notably lip balm. I’ve got a tube of Gold Bond ultimate on my desk now that’s got paraben in it. Almost everyone uses deodorant and/or antiperspirants, so it stands to reason that some of them will develop cancer of some sort in their lifetime.

Coming from folks whom are quite used to a bit of sweat - I’m at a loss for words. Times are ‘a changing. It used to be ok to sweat…heck, every guy or gal I know sweats with the best of them. I guess if cancer comes our way because we somehow don’t want to appear to be “human” anymore…then maybe we should learn that life is life…folks live…and die - some prematurely, and certainly loved and missed. Regardless of how we could die…perhaps we should concentrate on how we live. Life is for the living folks…so I say sweat! Don’t worry about deodorants or smelling a certain way – take a shower. I say let’s live a little…be “human” and Live Well!

MBeze deodorettes are natural and work amazingly well for odor control - no parabens or aluminum and the scents are great. This is the only deodorant that works for me when I wear a sleeveless shirt. They also come in really cool and hip packaging so you can keep it in your purse.
