I wanted to write about the Lester Street killings yesterday, then again last night, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it until today.
Hearing about it on TV was bad enough, but yesterday morning LifeBlood called me, with a request for my particular blood type for a “recent trauma victim at LeBonheur.” Of course they couldn’t tell me if they needed my blood for one of the three kids — one is a baby — who are at the hospital, but I assumed that’s who it was, since it’s pretty unusual for me to be called for a specific incident. Of course I went and donated right away. (You would have, too, even though their lost laptops could have my personal information on them, right?)
But I can’t stop thinking about this horrible crime. What would make someone shoot or stab four adults … then turn to the children? How could killing a baby in cold blood even be possible?
And what can we really do about this? My hat is off to Pastor Keith Norman at First Baptist Broad, who was on TV the night of the discovery of the crime spreading the good word about Binghampton, and who has built his church into a pillar of that community. Pastor Keith, what can we do for you?
What can we do for our city?

It’s time for everybody… African American, White, Hispanic, Asian to take to the streets in every community, as one body, one voice, crying at the top of our lungs……..No More! No more killing, no more dealing, no more pimping, no more whoring, no more fighting ……no more hatred. You’re not welcome here any more. The criminal element is a minority. We, the law-abiding members, are the majority …….it’s time we start acting like it in one united accord instead of cowering in our homes.
No More!

First of all, God bless you. My grandmother had AB negative blood and pernicious anaemia, and people like you kept her alive for much longer than she otherwise would have survived.
I don’t think this sort of horror has much to do with our city as a whole. It happens out of the blue and it doesn’t make sense.
