As always, Mother’s Day is a mixed blessing for me: I’m grateful beyond words for the fact that I’ve joined this Mom’s Club (photo to come later today), while I miss my own mother like a pain. In my column Sunday, I realized — as many of you already know (see comments below) – how much Mom’s cooking made a difference for us, and how much I treasure the hot-pink recipe cards she wrote for me.
Also, in case you missed it, Tom Friedman’s column yesterday was a terrific tribute.
So, how did you spend your Mother’s Day? What’s the best Mother’s Day gift you ever got?

I love hearing from you, and here are some notes that were in my e-mail box this morning:
Your story about your mother’s recipes made me cry. Shame on you; shame on me. We both should be laughing with joy for having Mama’s who loved us enough to share their love in so many ways. I adore this story and have sent it to so many folk. I’m pulling my hair out trying to get my kin folk to send recipes for a family cookbook… and you know what they say, “who would want…”, “I’m so busy…” and all the other meaningless words. I hope this story will give them a - the slackers in my family - the nudge they need to at least send their peanut butter fudge and gravy recipes!
Thanks for a great Mother’s Day reminder for me. I sure wish I could share it with my Mama! A fan as always, Helen

Thank you for the touching article. Perfectly captured my feelings today as our family decides how to eat! I am going through my own index cards now.
Thank you, Happy Mother’s Day!

Leanne — GREAT article in the Memphis Commercial Appeal on Mother’s Day 2008 –regarding your Mom’s love of cooking (and, YOU!) My Mom didn’t work but did have a HUGE garden and LOTS of “extras” to take care of in addition to my Dad, Grandmother and my two sisters and me — in the 50s just the washing and ironing was a CHALLENGE! She also cooked (3) meals a day — and we all copied her recipes like mad just before we each were married. And, yes, there is love, comfort and wonderful memories to do them yourself. Thanks for “bringing it all back” to me — and all of your readers. Joanne in Eads, TN P.S. My Mom and Dad also brought back recipes from restaurants they had eaten at.

Dear Ms. Kleinmann,
As a regular reader, I have enjoyed your column for some time now. I must tell you that today’s Mother’s Day tribute was a pleasure to read. Thank you for sharing your memories.
I must confess that by the time I got to reading the Chicken Roma receipe my mouth was watering! Would you consider sharing the receipe, please??!!!
Many thanks,
Ann
