1. My family didnt take any vacations that I can remember, but I remember going swimming A LOT at the pool in Shelby Forest.
2.Air Conditioning and lots of it.
3.My favorite summer vacation spot is Perdido Key, FL or the swing in my front yard.

1.Summers were at the water. A rented house on Long Island for a few weeks. And then, every weekend a beach, at the lake, the Sound, the Ocean, the Croton river (where we owned property). Water,water,water.
2. Cold showers. Also, where I live now, it doesn’t get very hot.(Northern CA.)
3.The Beach, especially, Hawaiian beaches.
4.Haven’t got a reading list yet, but definitely it has to be fun.
5. Italian ices.

1. Riding horses. Barns do not have air conditioning. One summer it got up to 116. That’s pretty hot to be working hard. We used to rinse ourselves off, fully clothed, with the hose on the wash rack. I also remember walking to McDonald’s in the scorching heat just so we could sit indoors for a while.

2. Air conditioning is a wonderful invention. In places with no air conditioning, “accidentally” dropping an ice cube down the front of your bra is really nice on those 100 degree days. If it gets too hot I rub ice on my pulse points.

3. I don’t take vacations in the summer. I’m self employed with no kids and it doesn’t make sense to go places when they’re most crowded. If I did go somewhere, it would be somewhere North, with air conditioning.

4. Right now I’m working on a video game which involves rock stars so I’m reading books about rock stars. Those people are all crazy!

5. Fried chicken and cucumber sandwiches. The cucumber sandwiches should be made with thin sliced bread, lots of butter, and cukes marinated overnight in Italian dressing with red onions. Plus iced tea with lemon.

1. Babysitting … swimming in my friend Anne’s pool … helping Mom can tomatoes and make jam … playing “kick the can” with the Shaffers … sitting in the swing under the oak at my Grammy’s.

2. Pack the pantyhose and heels away with the sweaters; sandals or flip-flops all summer! Ponytails are your summertime friend. Unplug the stove.

3. The park and campground at the Peaks of Otter, Va., in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Or Half Moon Beach, Vieques.

4. Mr. Jefferson’s Women by Jon Kukla; Telex from Cuba by Rachel Kushner; The Bible salesman by Clyde Edgerton; Things I want my daughters to know by Elizabeth Noble; and The rope walk by Carrie Brown.

5. Strawberries picked and eaten in the field, local peaches and homegrown tomato sandwiches — white bread and Duke’s mayo, please.

2. arnold palmers keep me cool in the summertime. it’s a half/half mix of lemonade and sweet tea. YUM.

3. it’s not extravagant but i always enjoy going to the lake for a long, peaceful weekend.

4. i think i’ll read all those books you gave me this summer. you know, the Bitter is the New Black Series…

5. shrimp kabobs, hands down.

1. i always went to camp. for a few years when i was really young i did outdoor camp, all day, everyday. it was wretched. i always did church camp for a week too. when i was in high school, i went to the beach two or three times a summer. that’s why i am not much of a beach fan anymore…
