SATC MovieWow. Sex & the City sure can bring out the heartfelt opinions.

Either the ladies illustrate all that’s good about girlfriends, or they’re personally responsible for the whoring of America.

Either they’re strong, independent women, or they’re too reliant on men for their happiness.

Either the fashion is fun and inspired, or completely unrealistic and silly. (Seriously. Was that bird on her head supposed to recall Bride of Frankenstein? It’s like they invited the comparison.)

Whatever your opinion of the show or the movie, it had a huge opening weekend, with an estimated $55.7 million take. They’re calling it the largest opening ever for a  romantic comedy. The only part of that that surprises me is that they’re calling it a “comedy.”

I thought the movie was sorely lacking in “Sex-isms” - those terrific one-liners that made the show so witty and fun (”I can’t be around that man - he’s dangerous and toxic. He’s manthrax.”). There were like, two. And one was about someone shitting their pants. When did SATC start doing cheap bathroom humor? Where’s the great sex jokes? The whining used to be funnier.

They finally added a woman of color to the script and she was completely superfluous to the storyline. It was overacted and underdeveloped and how important could Carrie’s assistant have been to her life (and the plot) if she never even introduced “Saint Louise” to her three best friends?

After all the years of waiting for Charlotte to be a mommy, wouldn’t that screentime have been better spent developing something - anything? - of a mommy storyline for her? It was like the writers had all these new characters, and they didn’t know what the hell to do with any of them.

And WHAT WAS UP WITH THE DAMN STUDDED BELT? I’d rather wear a bird in my hair.

Response to “Sex in the Theater”

Tiffany

I liked the movie, but agree with you about the fashion. Loved Miranda’s comment to Carrie about the bird (”That was a bird?”).

What I didn’t like was the behavior of some of the women who went to see the movie on Friday. (I’m looking at you, women on the 5th row during the 6:50 show at Studio on the Square). Just because you get dressed up to go see the movie with your girlfriends doesn’t mean you should act like you’re sitting in a bar. After a running commentary throughout the first half of the movie, “Oh, they’re shushing us, tee hee!”. Yes they are because you’re not in your living room and you’re being obnoxious!
